Apologies

I must apologise for the post dated Thursday 26th May 2011.

I unintentionally posted a different version of the post, in short where I had meant to include all the news I had posted my draft post.

I have now re-posted the original post in its place which can be found here.

Again many apologies and I hope I haven't deterred you too much from reading DotHorizon.

Thanks for visiting.

Xbox 360 System Update Overview

Please Note the following dates are located from sources within the UK and may not be accurate in other locations throughout the world

Ok, so the Xbox 360 has had a new system update performed, granted its not one that gives it a new look but it addresses some minor issues within the system as well as preparing it for new features.

So lets have a look shall we?

Within the new update we now have the following improvements and add-ins:

This update was rolled out for Xbox Users between May 19th 2011 and May 31st 2011
Update Version: 2.0.13146.0
Status: Public

System Software Changes
  • Reflashes the DVD drives to support XGD3 Media by the way of a new stock firmware.
  • Table and anti-piracy 2.5 scheme updated.
  • Support for the new XGD3 disk format for games, adds 1GB of usable disk space and extra anti-piracy features to new games. This has been noted to have not been compatible with older models of the 360, most notably the models with Lite-On DVD drives from about 2009. This incompatibility doesn't affect the 2007-2008 models nor the 2010 models, but specifically the 2009 models.*
  • Adds a new 1 hour Auto-Off setting in addition to the 6 hour Auto-Off setting previously available.
Xbox Live Changes
  • Adds PayPal support as a payment option for all Xbox Live users, except Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Hungary, India, Japan, Russia, South Africa, South Korea and Taiwan.
Kinect Changes
  • Preparing for Avatar Kinect. Allowing players to scan their face in real-time to match with their avatar.
Other
  • Minor bugfix.

* The incompatibility with the Lite-On drives means that users need a console replacement, however it doesn't affect ALL users, only some, Microsoft have said that they can detect this issue over Xbox Live and will contact users if they have the issue occur. This is presumably via the XBL Messaging Facility or Via Email to the users registered email address.
(Note: after some small comparisons, it would appear that the models affected by this are the Xbox 360 Premium 60GB Models, this is yet unconfirmed)

Thats all for now everyone.
I will be back soon with more tech news.
Until Then..

Laser Blasts New Record

A new pioneering technology utilizing lasers has broken its previous record on data transmission. It can transmit up to 10 Terabits a second(Tb/s).

As quoted from the BBC News Technology Page. That means At those speeds, the entire Library of Congress collections could be sent down an optical fibre in 10 seconds.

There was only one downside to this revelation, It used 327 lasers instead of just one, while this is a useful development, all those lasers would fill up data racks and consume huge amounts of power.
